Visiting Culebra Island Attractions
Discovered by Columbus in 1493, Isla Culebra (Snake Island) is a pristine island paradise offering visitors a peaceful vacation experience, fabulous snorkeling and diving, sweeping beaches, and plenty of native wildlife. Getting to Culebra: Island Transportation -
Culebra is located 17 miles off the Puerto Rican mainland, and is served by both ferry and airport service. Once on the island, visitors can rent a car, scooter or bike from one of the many rental companies located near the ferry.
Culebra Passenger Ferry -
Passenger ferry service to Culebra is offered several times a day from Fajardo. The 60-90 minute ferry ride costs around $2 per person each way. Tickets for the ferry can be purchased at the ticket booth one hour before departure. Caged pets are allowed on the passenger ferry, but not in the air-conditioned area. Cars and bicycles are not allowed on the passenger ferry, however they can be loaded on the cargo ferry with advanced reservations.
Airline Service to Culebra -
Visitors can fly to Culebra from the Puerto Rican mainland on two different carriers. Visitors can hop a 35-minute flight from the San Juan International Airport for about $120 per person, round trip.
Getting Around Culebra Island -
Once on the island, visitors can rent a car, scooter or bicycle to explore the island. Advance car rental reservations are highly recommended. Culebra also offers local taxi service, called Carro Publicos. These taxi-style vehicles are a cheap way to get around to most places on the island, although they will not take visitors to the more remote beaches.

Fishing -
Anglers will find Culebra to be a fisherman's paradise teeming with abundant species like Tarpon, Snook, Black Fin Tuna, Jacks, Bonefish, and False Albacore. Guided fishing charters are offered on the island, but boat and kayak rentals are also available for those who wish to go it alone.
Culebra National Wildlife Reserve -
Established in 1909 by Theodore Roosevelt, the 1,400-acre Culebra National Wildlife Refuge is home to migratory birds and other unique wildlife a variety of migratory seabirds and is a sheltered oasis for endangered sea turtles and Culebra's native giant chameleon. www.fws.gov/caribbean/Refuges/Culebra/
Mount Resaca -
Situated within the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge, Mount Resaca is home to one of the few remaining dry subtropical forest left on Culebra Island. Visitors can hike through the forest, view stunning orchids and bromeliads, catch a glimpse of the elusive giant anole, and watch for native birds.

Culebra Beaches
Flamenco Beach -
This sheltered beach features a long stretch of sand, crystal clear water, great opportunities for snorkeling the reefs, and plenty of services including showers, bathrooms and a few concession stands selling food and drinks.
Tamarindo Beach -
Tamarindo offers visitors calm, clear waters, sandy beach areas, and opportunities for snorkeling, sunbathing, swimming, and beachcombing.
Resaca Beach -
This remote beach is located off the beaten track, but the area's beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife and serene beach areas are definitely worth the effort and the hike. Hiking enthusiasts will appreciate Resaca Beach for its challenging trails and surfers prize the beach for its great waves. The Fish & Wildlife Service monitors Resaca for the turtle program, so be sure to contact them before heading down to the beach.
Carlos Rosario Beach -
Underwater adventurers will find some of the island's best snorkeling at Carlos Rosario Beach. Vibrant corals, plentiful fish, large reef areas, and crystal clear waters make this spot a favorite with snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.
